Fishing rights eroding- please sign our petition.

PostMon Apr 13, 2009 4:49 pm

Read this first link, and you'll see why we've got this petition and other things going to fight this.
http://www.safmc.net/Portals/6/Library/ ... rFAQ09.pdf
This FAQ document is a a relatively short read for anyone who wants to catch up on what is going on here and the reasoning they're giving. There are several points in this document that should stand out like flashing lights to any of us. Check out pages 7-9 especially. Answers to many of your questions about the process and what's coming soon if we do NOTHING are answered explicitly by this FAQ document.

I'm a member of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (http://www.joinrfa.org), but locally, we are trying to get this petition supported by everyone- not just recreational guys, but also charter guys, commercial guys, seafood guys, restaurants, and EVERYONE. This thing is serious. It has happened in other parts of the country and killed local seafood and recreational fishing. People sit by idle thinking this stuff won't happen, but it has happened slowly all over the country already. Please PLEASE help. Pass along to everyone you can.

Recreational red snapper fishing (and spearfishing) will VERY likely be banned starting this summer. http://www.safmc.net/News/NewsReleases/ ... fault.aspx

The importance of this has been discussed and argued at length by a few of us who have tried to keep up with everything that NMFS and SAFMC has been doing to us and for us lately. Please review those discussions or http://www.safmc.net to get up to speed, thereby reserving this thread for people to be simply notified about the petition.

There is also an online petition here:

Thanks, from those of us who like to fish for these fish and feel that the government has been used by fishing rights' opposition groups to twist assumptions and science about a fish they know relatively little about and take away our rights to fish for these fish and very possibly all others that live in the same habitat, both inshore and offshore.

Their office is right next door to mine in North Charleston. Here is the e-mail address to the Public Information Offier for S. Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Kim Iverson kim.iverson@safmc.net. E-mail here and she will add you to the newsletters for the issue and all others as well. Thanks Phin.
