Steering fluid on the 222 sportfish

PostSun Aug 14, 2016 1:42 pm

I found the steering fluid entry on the steering at the helm, but do not know how to check levels or service this. The boat is three years old, seems fine, but I am wondering if I am neglecting an important item on the boat.

I saw some posts here where people were having steering failures.

I don't think the marina I use addresses this on the 100 hour services for the Yamaha? Any recommendations? How often should it be attended to? thanks FFF

At three years you should not have any issues. As far as Seastar failures go, look for steering fluid running down from your steering wheel assembly (usually an easily replaced O ring on the steering shaft) & oil weeping from the hydraulic cylinders on the steering mechanism attached to the motor steering wishbone. This is also an easy repair with a $ 80.00 repair kit from Seastar.

Regarding oil level, just keep it topped off just below the vent cap (which you have already located).
