Hidden compartment in 197SF ?? Look at pictures.

PostFri Jan 30, 2015 10:51 pm

Hi. Last December I upgraded my 180 to the 197 :D I was installing today the wiring for my trolling motor (went very easy!) and found this very big hidden compartment under the front part of console floor. It is located in front of the gas tank. I took off the access panel and felt the big opening with my hand. Then I took my camera and took these pictures. Why Pioneer is not using this space? Does it drains to the bilge? Hope so. I would love to install a door on the floor and install down there maybe a water tank. I guess fuel fumes can be captured there so my trolling motor batteries may not go there. Anyway, has anyone before seen this? Here is a picture sequence from port to starboard looking towards the bow. The little empty pipe on the first picture is where I inserted the TM power wire towards the gunnel.

Wow that is a huge space. Wouldn't be hard to find something to use it for!

WOW, I have taken the access port off in my bait console to replaced the fuel tank sender unit...I never looked forward of the gas tank. I recall that I have an access port in the center console more or less lined up beneath the steering wheel. The next time I am on the boat (May probably) I will look to see if I have the same set up. Depending on what the weight would do to the boats trim a fresh water tank may be in my future!

You welcome. That is the access port that I am talking about. What year is your 197? I wonder if this space has to do with the reduction of gas tank size somewhere in 2013. I think it used to be 60gal and now is 56gal.

Probably has to do with all of the new regulations concerning fuel systems, valves, canister filters, etc., etc. that the regulation nation has imposed now

My 197 is a 2007 running with a zuke 150. I have the 70 gal tank. What size is your tank? If it is the 56 gallon tank the additional 10 gallons might occupy that space which would be too bad. I think a fresh water system would be fun however I look forward to others ideas for the space.

There it is. Yes new ones now have a 56gal capacity. That space looks like it would hold that 14 gal difference. Now I still wonder why Pioneer didn't take some advantage of it. :|

They could have at least offered a fresh water system as an option? I actually wish I had that space as I have never needed 70 gal. I run the boat on Block Island and go offshore no more than 10-12 miles. Even after trolling all day and the return trip I use way less than half of my tank. Its an easy, though expensive, refill back at the dock in Great Salt Pond.
I wonder what everyone else on the forum uses in terms of gas and refills

I keep my tank always full and have never traveled more than 60mi (30mi each way) on a trip. So having a smaller tank I save on carrying fuel weight. I think I will call Pioneer and check what they say about my idea of cutting an access hole to that area.

In my Islander I think this space is taken up by the larger and deeper console than the one offered on the SF. You had me excited there for a bit . I would take advantage of any extra space that I can get. Is that space directly under your console?

EDIT: reread your first post. Yep that space is used in my boat. I bet you could put a hatch in there.

And now that you mention that I think I am sure that is probably why they reduced the fuel tank capacity for the whole line. That way they order just one part # at higher volume.
