How to diagnose live well pump?

PostThu Jun 26, 2014 6:35 pm

My 2012 180SF live well pump stopped working. I can hear a faint humm but no water flow. It has done that before but then worked. Not this time. What is the best way to diagnose it? Thanks.

You can disconnect the hose from the thru hull and put it in a container of water in the bilge....even a quart would do.
Pour some into the hose to prime it and turn it on. My had a habit of getting a vapor lock on the water until I drilled a few holes
in the starboard vent that covers the intake. I angled the holes so that while running water would tend to scoop into the intake....I drilled
them as far forward in the vent as I could as that's where the intake is....

Thanks. Not sure I ca do that. Mine is directly connected to the thru-hull. Boat is on the water this week. Can the pump get clogged? I have gone through some sea weeds lately.

Sometimes my pump gets air in the system and it has a hard time drawing a prime... I think I'm going to drill larger holes in the plate on the underside of my boat... Sometimes if I use my washdown pump first before turning on the livewell pump it has enought balls to prime the livewell pump.

On that one you can just twist the motor/impeller out of the housing. Have someone turn it on while you're holding it looking at the impeller.
You can replace the cartridge motor/impeller. I think they sell that brand/model at WalMart.

Thanks. Do you mean at the top where the red part is? Or at the bottom white threaded neck?

Here are pics of it....it comes out counter clockwise. Look at the pics closely. There's a red plastic
tab you have to push in to be able to twist it. The tab has a lip on it that will catch an prevent from being turned. In your picture
I think the actual locking tab is on the other side. The one I'm showing is a bilge pump, but they all use the same "cartridge".

Thanks again 1bayouboy! You saved me a lot of time. Probably i would have removed the whole thing. Took me 1 minute to take it of and 3 to unplug the whole thing. Seems the gear shaft rusted and broke. Now to get a new one.
