220 Baysport Rod Locker, support bracket mounting

Postby HeadsAndTails on Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:15 am

The rod locker on the 220 BS has a bracket to support the reel and butt end of the rod. This bracket is "attached" to the liner. But I can't tell if it's screwed or bolted on. I would like to be able to remove the bracket and use that as a fish box when I wahoo fishing. But I also want to be able to remount the bracket.

So how is the rod support bracket in the rod locker mounted?

thanks,
H&T

They are just screwed in with screws.

Don't forget to think about adding/modifying a drain for that.

Foster, the rod holders can be left in, then just use clorox to clean up. Just make sure you plug the rod tubes so water, ice, and fish slime doesn't get in there. I used a solid foam "water noodle" style float, cut it to fit.

There should already be a drain in the boxes.

You might be able to use one of these fish bags. I've hear they work great and it would be a lot less mess to clean up.

That's exactly what I use. I have a bag that I put fish in, I store the ice in the front fish box with the bag folded on top, then when I need it I scoop ice out of box into the bag. I usually get ice in bulk form, its cheaper.

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to be a smarta$$, they are just stainless steel sheet metal type screws. I found a couple that were stripped out on my holder and I just replaced them with some larger ones.

sorry for my late reply:

orangecrush - You weren't a smarta* at all and I appreciated your answer

yellow186 & Henry - I'd be worried about the wahoo banging around and loosening the rod holder

grouper therapy - I would like to hear more about the drain. How should it be modified?

thanks

That inner liner is thin - you probably won't be able to remove and re-install those screws for the support brackets more than 5 or 6 times. An alternative would be to drill the holes oversize and fill with an epoxy "plug" containing a stainless steel nut so you can remove/replace as often as possible. There's probably some other, more clever, solutions along those same lines that you could investigate too.
A better alternative is to get you a "fish billy" and give those pesky Wahoo a few good whacks on the noggin to calm them down before slipping them into that fish bag. Those teeth are a lot less dangerous when that critter is knocked out cold :D

Good luck,
Pete

H&T, since I don't have a 186, I wasn't sure if there even was a drain in the storage, just wanted to make sure you had one. If you did, would you want it to drain into the bilge or overboard? I personally prefer for fish 'fluids' to drain overboard as opposed to into my bilge, less clean up and odor...just a suggestion
